To grow quality transplants, growers should select a soil having good drainage and free from weeds. 2 to 3 kg seeds and 4 to 5 marla land will be required for preparing onion seedlings for cultivating onion in one acre. Before sowing, land should be thoroughly prepared and seedbeds should be properly made. In prepared seed beds, at a distance of 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 inches), deep lines of 2 to 3 cm (1 inch) should be drawn and seeds should be placed in those lines and then should be covered with well rotten manure or compost. During Autumn, seedbeds should be covered with reeds or straw etc. and water should be sprinkled in such a way that water does not stand in the seedbeds and moisture is retained.
