Ducks as effective pest control.

Pakistan is amongst top ten most populous countries of the world and more than 65% of the population lives in rural areas. Besides financial constraints the people are facing serious issues of disease outbreak because there are big reservoirs of waste water that are places of many pathogens. Ducks rearing was a traditional source of protein in rural Punjab but during late 1990s the exotic breeds like Khaki Campbell being comparatively better egg producer, replaced local traditional breed. Khaki Campbell duck rearing in place of local breed proved a failure eventually because of less resistance to local environmental conditions and being docile.

Present project is therefore planned to re-introduce the local breeds of ducks into native ecosystems due to the following reasons:

1) Biological control of pests and parasites
2) Villagers know, how to rear local ducks
3) Cleaning of heap filth and human and animals waste
4) Best source of organic protein for local/ communities
5) Resistant to various diseases
6) Easy to rear
7) Livelihood support/Poverty alleviation

The ducks will be reared / purchased by the Department of Wildlife and Ecology, Ravi Campus, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore and will be distributed among the inhabitant of villages in Punjab province, residing near water bodies. The financial support for the rearing/purchase and distribution of adult ducks among local communities will be provided by the Livestock & Dairy Development Department, Government of the Punjab.
