Loose smut disease in wheat crop and its prevention

When wheat crop starts the grain formation, the spike is covered with blackish material due to spores of the fungus. This fungus survives inside the plant probably in the seed and only visible after head emergence. Growers can observe the brown or black smutted heads with no grain formation. The infected plant could be identified in the field which is taller and more mature than the rest of the crop. The disease can be controlled by removing infected plants from the field and using a good systemic fungicide such as difenaconazole to prevent further spread.
